S.M. Stirling's

On the Oceans of Eternity

Author S. M. Stirling contacted us last year to compliment us on Hearts of Gold and to inquire about using various quotations in his latest work. We, of course, were thrilled to be a part of his novel and readily agreed. Now in Print, On the Oceans of Eternity, is the final installment in his trilogy of time travel and alternative history. The first book, Island in the Sea of Time started the saga of a mysterious event that took the entire island of Nantucket and all its population back into the Bronze Age. The US Coastguard training vessel Eagle in all its square-rigged glory is taken along for the ride and so begins a tale of action, intrigue, adventure with various Bronze Age civilizations all painstakingly researched and carefully plotted. Against the Tide of Years continued the developement of growth and change both for the Islanders and the ancient cultures coping with technological secrets that rival magic and bring about strange new detours on the road of history.

This latest novel features many quotes from the songs found in Hearts of Gold including Companioned by the Sea, The Sailor's Way, Pump Shanty Hob y Deri Dando, Hearts of Gold, and even a few from Round the Corner as well. Both of us have enjoyed the first two books and are anxious to start on the third. We hope you'll find them in stores and enjoy these rousing tales.

Felicia Dale Short Stories in Print

Most of you know of Felicia's musical skills from recordings and performances. You may not realize that she is also a writer! We're proud and happy to announce that her short story, Shadow has been published in an anthology by DAW Books entitled
“New Amazons.”

Here's an except from page one:

" Shadow ran through the crowded, sunny streets without a pause to find her way. Her tough brown feet made no sound on the hot stones as she slipped effortlessly through knots of slower-moving pedestrians as neatly as her namesake.
She took to the alleys to avoid the crush of the central market and was soon at her destination. She paused, panting, her heart thumping in her breast. The sign that hung on the iron bracket over the door showed a green serpent devouring a white star. This was the house of the wizard Irilzar and Shadow was to carry a message for him, so her master had ordered.
After a short but intense internal struggle with her dread of what might lie on the other side of the door, Shadow raised her fist to knock but before she could touch it the door opened. A short, wizened red imp of the common type stood before her, glaring at her from milky, pupil-less eyes that burned sun-white under the beetling, red, hairless brows, glared and then grinned and popped a ridiculous bow.
Then, it bowed again and held the door wide open, inviting her into the dark maw of the hallway.
"I'm the m-messenger," Shadow stammered, taken aback. Usually she was handed a scroll or pouch, given directions and sent on her way. The imp bowed and grinned obsequiously but with a hint of worry beginning to cloud its wrinkled, ruby face. It glanced over its shoulder as if it was afraid of what might happen if she hesitated too long. Reluctantly, Shadow stepped over the threshold."

It has stories about women who sacrifice things and do battle against an enemy in order to overcome great trials. Like any anthology, this one has stories that range in their ability to entertain. This article will cover stories that are the most entertaining and memorable....

" The longest story is "Shadow" by Felicia Dale. Shadow is a young slave girl caught in a struggle between two wizards. First she is turned into a hawk and finds herself a prisoner with a young boy of one wizard. The boy possesses healing magic and asks Shadow to help him before the mage takes his body. He transfers his magic and soul to her in time. Shadow must struggle to help the boy and herself throughout her long ordeal. This story has excellent characters, a good plot and interesting setting. It's one of the best in the book."

Daring the Sea by David W. Shaw published by Pinnacle lays out the saga of Harbo and Samuelsen stroke by stroke across the Atlantic Ocean. Shaw has meticulously researched the history of this pair of Norsemen/Oarsmen and manages to lay to rest many legends about their journey (several of which we have helped to perpetuate). We won't say which details of their voyage have been altered over the years -- you'll have to read the book yourself, but, we can say that this hair-raising adventure story will keep you at the edge of your seat and give a new and greater appreciation for Harbo and Samuelsen's triumphant voyage across the Atlantic.
